Communications and Marketing Committee – May 2020 Report

The group met 0 times this quarter.

Recent Activities

First Activity
Continued to post marketing requests to appropriate social media channels.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Member Engagement

What will your group be working on for the next three months?
I anticipate that our work will be absorbed into a new Core committee in August, which is a recommendation I have made to working groups. We will not be doing any other work prior to that.

Is there anything LITA could have provided during this time that would have helped your group with its work?
I think this year had a number of special circumstances given the shift to Core and COVID. Staff were busy and committee members had to prioritize other work. We may have benefited from more direction or communication, however I understand the strain everyone was under.

Please provide suggestions for future education topics, initiatives, publications, resources, or other activities that could be developed based on your group’s work.
I have made this recommendation to at least one working group, but I think that ideally CAM's work should be absorbed into a larger committee. CAM's work over the last few years has largely become rote social media dissemination. The work no longer really resembles the group's charge. Realistically, social media could be one aspect of a larger committee's work, with a few volunteers charged with supporting it. Marketing and communication strategy would do better tied to groups like member engagement, development, or education, etc. I think this is an opportune time to re-examine the structure or charges of any communications and marketing focused committes.

Additional comments or concerns:
In December we had started working with staff to pivot our work towards better understanding what content did well on social media and engaging new LITA members. However, with the change in our lives due to COVID-19, lead up to the vote, and then the transition to CORE, that work largely stopped so we just kept up the operational aspect of posting marketing requests to social media over the last few months. However, marketing requests have also diminished over the last year.

For the first time ever, CAM, MDC, and the Blog committee all collaborated on the March LITAchat. MDC recruited the interviewees, the Blog Committee published profiles of the interviewees prior to the event, and CAM promoted the chat and ran the actual chat session.

Communications and Marketing Committee – December 2018 Report

The group met 2-3 times this quarter.

Recent Activities

First Activity
CAM continued to post to LITA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, responding to submissions to the Publicity Request Form and scheduling social media posts two to three times for each submission.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Education and Professional Development, Member Engagement

Second Activity
CAM also changed our methodology for assigning social media duties to committee members. Previously, members opted in for posting on certain weeks via a shared Google Calendar. Now, the committee chair assigns committee members weeks of posting responsibility, with members being assigned an average of one week every two months. This ensures greater participation and simplifies the scheduling process.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Organizational Stability and Sustainability

Third Activity
CAM continued collecting social media analytics for LITA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. The committee chair partnered with Jenny Levine, LITA Executive Director, to generate a Google Analytics report that shows the number of referrals each month from LITA’s social media accounts to LITA’s websites. This information shows how LITA’s social media presence drives traffic to other LITA web presences. These statistics are now being tabulated and reported in monthly meeting minutes and the LITA CAM Google Drive account.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Organizational Stability and Sustainability

Fourth Activity
CAM continues to partner with the Membership Development Committee on monthly #LITAchats on Twitter, with the most recent chat occurring on the final Friday of November.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Member Engagement

What will your group be working on for the next three months?
CAM will continue posting to LITA’s social media channels, collecting analytics, and partnering with Membership Development on upcoming #LITAchats.

Is there anything LITA could have provided during this time that would have helped your group with its work?
We could use a few more members, but recruitment is already underway (thank you!)

Please provide suggestions for future education topics, initiatives, publications, resources, or other activities that could be developed based on your group’s work.
Social media analytics would be an interesting topic for webinars, publications, etc.

Communications and Marketing Committee – September 2018 Report

The group met 1 time this quarter.

Recent Activities

First Activity
The LITA Communications & Marketing Committee migrated our documentation and training materials to the new ALA Connect site to centralize the committee's documentation and to give members a one-stop resource for everything CAM related.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Organizational Stability and Sustainability

Second Activity
The Communications & Marketing committee worked closely with Jenny Levine, LITA Executive Director, to migrate the committee's promotion request form from Jotform.com to Lita.org, giving the form more legitimacy and better branding it as an organizational tool. The form was then shared with LITA's leadership via an ALA Connect post.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Organizational Stability and Sustainability

Third Activity
The Communications & Marketing Committee collaborated with the Membership Development Committee to plan a #LITAchat in October to promote the upcoming LITA Forum on Twitter. The live chat will give LITA members an opportunity to learn more and ask questions about the 2019 LITA Forum.
Meets LITA’s strategic goals for Member Engagement

What will your group be working on for the next three months?
The Communications & Marketing Committee will continue to post to LITA's social media channels to promote events, workshops, courses, and other news of interest to LITA members. The committee is also beginning to analyze social media analytics for LITA's Twitter and Facebook accounts to better understand how members engage with LITA's social media presence.

Is there anything LITA could have provided during this time that would have helped your group with its work?
In hindsight, the Communications & Marketing Committee would benefit from having read-only access to LITA's Google Analytics data for lita.org and the blog. This would let us track how LITA's social media accounts drive traffic to LITA's main web presences.

Please provide suggestions for future education topics, initiatives, publications, resources, or other activities that could be developed based on your group’s work.
Social media posting best practices and social media analytics courses and publications might be of interest to LITA members.
